While most people are glued for updates on the escape of at least three convicts of the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP), two inmates of Matnog Police Station in Sorsogon have been enjoying their liberty right under the noses of the cops who were supposed to jail them.
On Tuesday, Jan. 18, the unauthorized freedom being extended to inmates JR Genablazo and Pedro Garote ended after agents of the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) chanced upon them while enjoying a joyride near the public market of Matnog town.
IMEG director Police Brig. Gen. Oliver Enmodias said they have already asked the Police Regional Office 5 to investigate the entire police force of Matrnog town over the incident.
“This blatant irregularity from PNP personnel in the lower units will never be tolerated,” said Enmodias as he vowed to pursue criminal and administrative charges against the personnel of the Matnog Police Station.
“PNP personnel in the lower units should be the bearer of the standard discipline that every PNP personnel should have since they are the ones in constant interaction with the community. They should be a role model,” he added.
Genablazo is facing a case related to illegal drugs while Garate was charged with a case of rape.
How they the two enjoy the freedom outside their detention facility is something that the IMEG want to be cleared during the conduct of investigation, said Enmodias.
“Both of them were always seen outside the detention cell without pertinent documents or court orders,” he said.
Enmodias said his men mapped out the operation after they received reports of the protection that the two allegedly enjoy from the hands of the local police.
They were arrested at around 10:30 a.m. while on board a motorcycle without license plate at the public market of Matnog town.
