Legazpi, 5 Albay towns suspend classes as COVID-19 cases soar

LEGAZPI CITY – This city, along with five municipalities in Albay province, announced on their respective social media accounts on Monday the suspension of classes from January 17-28 due to rising number of active coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.

In an advisory, Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal said the order is part of the City Inter-Agency Task Force's preemptive action, considering the surge of confirmed infections in the city.

The suspension of classes covers all levels in both public and private schools and "submission of academic requirements and conduct of other teaching-related activities shall be moved to a later date," the announcement read.

It also reminded that all other agencies and instrumentalities must have 60 percent or less on-site workforce while applying work-from-home and other flexible work arrangements.

Mayor Ann Gemma Onjoco of Guinobatan, Albay suspended modular and online classes in the municipality until January 31.

Daraga Mayor Victor Perete also postponed enrollment and suspended the reporting of teaching and non-teaching personnel inside the school campus as well as "other school activities whether physical or virtual, that involve learners, school-based personnel, and parents".

Meanwhile, Pioduran Mayor Alan Arandia said that during the suspension of classes, all personnel having flu-like symptoms should mandatorily observe self-isolation measures and report to the Barangay Health Emergency Response Team (BHERT) once symptoms worsen for proper medical evaluation and contact tracing purposes.
