PH cyclone-free in the next 3 to 5 days; shear line, ‘amihan’ to bring rains, thunderstorms across PH

No weather disturbance is expected to develop and affect the Philippines in the next two to three days, but various weather systems may affect the country and bring isolated rains and thunderstorms, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, Jan. 16.

In a public weather forecast, PAGASA weather specialist Ana Clauren said that the northeast monsoon, locally called ‘amihan’, and the shear line or the convergence of warm and cold winds may bring isolated rains and thunderstorms across the country.

“Patuloy pa ring nakakaapekto ang shear line sa silangang bahagi ng Mindanao na kung saan ito ay nagdudulot ng mga kalat-kalat na pag-ulan, pagkidlat, at pagkulog. Northeast monsoon naman ang nakakaapekto sa nalalabing bahagi ng ating bansa na kung saan ‘yan naman po ay magdudulot ng makulimlim na panahon na may mahihinang pag-ulan (The shear line continues to affect the eastern section of Mindanao and it is bringing scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. Northeast monsoon affects the rest of the country and it is bringing cloudy skies with light rains),” said Clauren.

Due to the shear line, PAGASA said that flash floods and landslides may occur during moderate to at times heavy rains in Mindanao, eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Bohol.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon is expected to bring cloudy skies with light rains in Cagayan Valley, Bicol region, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Aurora, and Quezon.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country may likewise experience a fair weather condition with isolated light rains due to the northeast monsoon.

“Wala po tayong binabantayan na anumang sama ng panahon o low pressure area (LPA) na maaaring makaapekto sa ating bansa in the next three to five days (No weather disturbance or LPA is expected to affect the country in the next three to five days),” said Clauren.
