Baguio records new COVID cases record in a day

BAGUIO CITY – The country’s summer capital has recorded another chilling record as it surpassed its previous high in terms of number of COVID cases recorded in a day.

On Thursday, Jan. 13, this city tallied 516 fresh COVID cases, breaking its past record of 411 set on September 18, 2021.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the latest projections show the city's cases may peak to 400-500 a day amid the new wave believed to be driven by the highly contagious omicron variant.

The active cases may also reach the 9,000-10,000 mark before realizing a downtrend.

Thursday's new infections are also higher than 374 new cases recorded in the city on Wednesday. This brought the city's active case tally to 2,067.

This just came a week after the city's Health Services Office said it expects around 250 to 300 daily cases.

As of Thursday, CAR has 3,387 active cases with 931 new infections.

Magalong said, the city has not officially registered an omicron variant case as of today, but believes community transmission of the new variant is now happening due to the surge of cases.

“It is a challenging variant that is why we cannot take it lightly. While some say it is less severe, let’s not be complacent because it can still overwhelm our health system and it will be our greatest challenge because if our health workers are affected, the implication will be felt by other sectors,” said Magalong.
