The Philippines registered on Monday, Jan. 10 another record-high tally of new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases at 33,169.
Monday's case bulletin already surpassed the previous day's tally on Sunday, Jan. 9 of 28,707 new cases.
This brings the country's total number of COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,998,530, nearly breaching 3 million cases.
DOH's data showed that 157,526 are currently infected with COVID-19 or 5.3 percent of the total number of cases.
Of this, 147,912 are mild; 4,994 are asymptomatic; 2,858 are moderate; 1,461 are severe while 301 are in critical condition.
The agency also recorded 3,725 new recoveries, bringing the total to 2,788,711 or 93 percent of the total number of cases while 145 have died, bringing the death toll to 52,293 or 1.74 percent of the total number of cases.
New variants
DOH clarified that regarding alleged variants of COVID-19 which are Deltacron/Delmicron, Flurona, and IHU variants, the World Health Organization (WHO) is the sole authority that can validate them.
It added that only the WHO can determine if they are Variants under Monitoring (VUM), Variants of Interest (VOI), or Variants of Concern (VOC).
DOH has also continuously reminded the public to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and that vaccines work. Health Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire reiterated that COVID-19 vaccines with emergency use authority in the Philippines are safe, effective and free.
The public is also reminded to take action at the very first sign of mild symptoms, as this may still be a cause for transmission and that more transmission means more mutation.
