Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo Niño in Tondo cancels public feast masses

The Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo Niño in Tondo, Manila has canceled all its public feast masses for the observance of the Feast of the Child Jesus amid the surge of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases.

A Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines News post said the parish announced the closure to the public of the church on Jan. 15 and 16 to prevent mass gathering.

The Church traditionally marks the feast of the Santo Nino on the third Sunday of January.

"This move is to prevent the influx of devotees who are at risk of infection with COVID-19," the parish said.

In lieu of the physical masses, the faithful are invited to join the Eucharistic celebration online through the shrine’s Facebook page.

"Let us celebrate the feast of our beloved Santo Niño in a safe and peaceful way in our homes. Let us pray together that this pandemic will end," read the parish announcement.

The Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in Cebu City, earlier, canceled its public masses for the 457th Fiesta Señor on Jan. 16.

Devotees are instead advised to join the holy masses online through the basilica’s Facebook page and Youtube channel.

Before the pandemic, the feast of the Child Jesus was a much-awaited event and was marked with grand processions, festive dancing, and holy masses that were attended by hundreds of thousands of devotees around the country.
