Damage to agriculture due to 'Odette' hits P9-B mark

The damage to agriculture due to the devastation wrought by typhoon "Odette" especially in the Visayas and Mindanao has already reached P9-billion, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said.

Based on the data presented by DA’s Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DA-DRRM), the reports on agriculture losses covered 11 regions, the most affected are the Visayas regions and some parts of Mindanao.

The DA report also disclosed that a total of 132,658 farmers and fishers were affected by Odette, with a volume of production loss at 194,671 metric tons (MT) in 351,932 hectares of agricultural areas.

The damaged agriculture products include rice, corn, high-value crops, coconut, sugarcane, livestock, and fisheries. "Odette" also wrecked agricultural infrastructures, machinery, and equipment.

On the other hand, DA officials committed at least P2.9 billion assistance will be provided to farmers and fisherfolk affected.
