Defending champion Barangay Ginebra San Miguel got its bearings back after holding off Rain or Shine, 83-77, Wednesday, Sept. 8 in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Don Honorio Ventura State University in Bacolor, Pampanga.
Scottie Thompson capped off his all-around performance with a corner three as the Gin Kings improved to an even 3-3 record five days after absorbing a shock 95-90 defeat to the Terrafirma Dyip.
Ginebra was supposed to play Meralco last Sept. 5 but was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols, allowing more for Cone and his staff to make further adjustments.
Coach Tim Cone was pleased to see Ginebra play comfortably against a Rain or Shine squad that has allowed the fewest points since the start of the conference with a 73.7 average.
“We did what we wanted to do tonight,” Cone said. “We kept the tempo the way we wanted to play the game, and I thought that was the important part.
“We let our defense do the talking for us tonight. We played a really good defensive team tonight in Rain or Shine. They are statistically the top defensive team in the league.”
But the Gin Kings need to hit key shots as well in order to stave off the Elasto Painters, who didn’t budge after trailing 62-52 on an alley-oop dunk by Japeth Aguilar.
Beau Belga’s basket put Rain or Shine behind 75-74, but Ginebra answered with Christian Standhardinger scoring an underhand layup on the next play.
Tenorio extended the gap to five by scoring a tough corner jumper before Thompson buried a corner triple to make it 82-74 for the Gin Kings, 27.4 seconds remaining.
Thompson posted 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals, Standhardinger topscored with 16 points while six rebounds and five assists, Aguilar had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Tenorio added 15 points and five assists.
Rey Nambatac, whose outside shooting propelled Rain or Shine to leads in the first half, scored 18 points while rookie Anton Asistio provided the spark with 14 points.
But the Elasto Painters dropped to an even 4-4 slate, their second straight that started when they blew a 15-point lead in a 78-77 loss to the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters last Sept. 2.
