Former SMB import Ceballos reveals battle with COVID-19

Former NBA player and PBA import Cedric Ceballos has asked for prayers and support as he continues to battle COVID-19 for more than a week now.

Ceballos, who played one game for San Miguel Beer as a replacement import for injured Kwan Johnson during the 2003 Reinforced Conference Finals, posted on his Twitter account his condition where he is currently in the intensive care unit.

“On my 10th day in ICU, COVID-19 is officially kicking my but(t)," Ceballos said, posting a photo of him breathing through an oxygen mask Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).

“I am asking ALL family, friends, prayer warriors healers for your prayers and well wish for my recovery.”

“If I have done and anything to you in the past , allow me to publicly apologize.

My fight is not done..... Thx”

In that single game against Coca-Cola, the 6-foot-7 Ceballos played just three quarters. He finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds in an 86-81 win. SMB lost the series 4-3.

Ceballos played for then SMB coach Jong Uichico, and teammates with PBA legends Danny Ildefonso, Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros and Olsen Racela.

Ceballos is best remembered as a Slam Dunk champion during the 1992 All-Star Weekend. He capped his bid with a perfect score of 50 when he took off from inside the painted area blind-folded.

The 52-year-old Ceballos played 11 seasons in the NBA, including a stint with the Phoenix Suns that lost to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls during the 1993 NBA Final series.

Selected by the Suns with the 48th overall pick in the 1990 NBA Draft, Ceballos likewise played for the Los Angeles Lakers. During the 1994-1995 Season, he led L.A. in scoring with 21.7 points per game.

That same season, Ceballos was named to the West All-Star team but did not play because of an injury. He also played for the Dallas Mavericks, the Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat, his last NBA stint in 2001.
