With all the negative effects of climate change in different parts of the world such as sea levels rising, flooding, droughts, wildfire, strong natural disasters, among others, the future of our children is definitely at risk. Without a doubt, climate change threatens the young generation’s life, health, education, and even dreams.

Now, it’s our responsibility as stewards to instill in our kids the love for our planet to make sure that they will grow in a safe environment and achieve their goals one day. We should act now and rise to the challenge of global warming, where our children are one of the most vulnerable sectors of its harmful effect.

Aware of this responsibility and challenge, the Center for Art, New Venture & Sustainable Development (CANVAS), in collaboration with Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK), recently published an activity book entitled “I am the Change in Climate Change” to help parents, educators, and guardians educate their children about this complex yet important issue.

“The book fits well and is consistent with CANVAS’ interest in environmental issues,” said CANVAS Executive Director Gigo Alampay. “It’s grounded in science and also reassures children to realize that there are things they can do, even at that early age, to respond to and adapt to climate change.”

Aiming to empower kids six to 12 years old, the author of the book Alyssa M. Peleo-Alampay, who has earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Science at the University of California, San Diego, USA, didn’t just present what climate change is, its history, causes, and effects, but also most importantly those simple day-to-day solutions that kids can do to help prevent extreme global warming.

Moreover, its age-appropriate contents and interactive activities, which are coupled with artistic and child-friendly illustrations, could pave the way to increase children’s adaptive capacity and motivations to be environmental stewards in the community. Not to mention, it could raise a generation that could be capable of creating real change.
