Prelate warns public vs harmful effects of gambling

Ozamiz Archbishop Martin Jumoad has warned the public against the negative effects of gambling.

Jumoad said that gambling may lead to addiction and could lead people to carry out crimes.

“Ako categorically will speak no talaga sa sugal kasi magkokonek ito sa ibang (I categorically will speak no with regards to gambling because it is connected to different) crimes, family will be destroyed; relationship between the husband and wife as well as the relationship with children,” Jumoad said in an interview with Church-run Radyo Veritas on Saturday, Sept. 4.

“Kung wala ng pera pantustos sa sugal maaring magnakaw at simula ng korapsyon (If there is no money to fund their gambling activity, then theft and corruption can happen),” he added.

President Duterte has allowed the resumption of casino operations in Boracay on Aug. 28, amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The decision of the President is part of the government's efforts to generate more funds for the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Evil is evil, vice is vice and it will not enhance the virtue--- mas mahirap pa baka maging gambling capital ang bansa at mahirap na ito kontrolin. Kung may gambling may other vices din yan (It will be hard for the country if it becomes a gambling capital and it will be difficult to control it. If there is gambling, there are other vices as well),” said Jumoad.
