EJ Obiena lost his steam in the Allianz Memorial Van Damme Wanda Diamond League in Brussels, Belgium after finishing 10th on Friday (Saturday in Manila).
Obiena, who is coming of a runner-up finish in Meeting de Paris a few days ago and a new world ranking at No. 5, struggled by clearing 5.65 meters on his third attempt to settle behind world record holder and Olympic champion Armand Duplantis.
Duplantis remained unstoppable after winning the event with a new meet record of 6.05m. American champion Chris Nilsen, who won the 2020 Tokyo Olympic silver medal, came in second with 5.85m while fellow American KC Lightfoot finished third with a personal best of 5.85m on his third try.
Obiena attempted 5.75m but was unsuccessful.
His performance was a far cry from his 5.91m feat in Paris that set a new national record.
Despite this, Obiena still earned enough points to make it through the Diamond League final set Sept. 8 to 9.
