Mayor Belmonte supports DOLE probe on TUPAD anomaly in QC

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Saturday expressed full support for the investigation on the alleged irregularities in the distribution of benefits under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program in the city's second district.

The lady mayor took note of the order issued by Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III suspending the implementation of the emergency employment program amid reports of anomalies in the distribution of cash aid.

“Suportado natin ang plano ng DOLE na imbestigahan ang umano'y anomalyang ito. Dapat mapapanagot ang utak sa likod ng panlolokong ito sa ating mga residente (We support the DOLE's plan to investigate this alleged anomaly. The brains behind this scam must be held accountable to our residents),” Belmonte said.

“Kung kumpirmado, nakalulungkot ang pangyayaring ito dahil marami sa ating mga residente ang nawalan ng karampatang benepisyo na malaki sana ang maitutulong ngayong panahon ng pandemya (If confirmed, this incident is unfortunate because many of our residents have lost the due benefits that could have helped a lot in this time of pandemic),” she added.

Bello has ordered DOLE-NCR Director Sara Buena Mirasol to look into the complaints lodged by some beneficiaries from Barangay Holy Spirit.

The complainants claimed they only received P2,000 instead of P7,518.

According to a report, a coordinator of the program said she was instructed to accompany the beneficiaries to a remittance center and deduct P5,518 from their cash assistance.

The Quezon City government has its own TUPAD program for the hiring of hundreds of contact tracers who help the local government in its campaign to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the communities.
