Fate of PFL season up for discussion

The Philippines Football League is set to hold a meeting in the first week of October to plan for the start of the 2021 season which has been delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

PFL commissioner Coco Torre assured everyone that the league continues to find ways to have the season push through at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite, the same pitch where last year’s shortened campaign was held under a bubble setup.

“We have not given up on holding a season and we understand how much the fans and stakeholders want to hold the league this season,” Torre said in a statement Wednesday, Sept. 29.

“That’s why we are doing everything we can to make the season happen, but we also have to understand the realities on the ground especially given the current situation,” he added.

League officials have been discussing with the seven participating clubs about the quarantine status in Carmona and feasibility of having a semi-bubble concept prescribed by the Inter-Agency Task Force.

Metro Manila is currently under Alert Level while Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine regulations are being implemented in Carmona.

The league had been pushed back numerous times, the last was a planned Sept. 25 start featuring defending champion United City, Kaya-Iloilo, Azkals Development Team, Stallion-Laguna, Mendiola FC 1991, Maharlika-Manila and new club Cebu FC.

Initial plans to bring back the Copa Paulino Alcantara, the annual cup competition last staged in 2019, were scrapped several months ago.
