Carpio not keen on VP bid after 1Sambayan endorsed Robredo for president
Retired Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio said on Thursday, September 30, he was not willing to run for vice president in the 2022 elections because of his role in the opposition coalition 1Sambayan.

For Carpio, there is a “conflict of interest” if he seeks the vice presidency.
“When I accepted this role, I was asked if I will run. I said I have no plans of running so I accepted this role. I will have to decline because that’s a conflict of interest,” he said during the 1Sambayan’s nomination of Vice President Leni Robredo as its standard-bearer next year.
Carpio is the chairman and lead convenor of 1Sambayan, which was formed to unite pro-democracy forces and beat the administration’s bets in the upcoming polls.
In the program, he was asked if he was willing to be the vice presidential runningmate of Robredo in the event the latter asks him to do so.
As 1Sambayan’s presidential candidate, Robredo can choose those who the coalition will endorse as her vice presidential and senatorial candidates.

“Well, as we have explained, the vice president and the senatorial candidates will be chosen in consultation with our presidential candidate because our presidential candidate is the lead in the unified ticket so we have to consult with her,” Carpio said.
The vice president has previously insisted the need to continue unity talks because she believes only a united opposition can beat President Duterte’s anointed one.
The 1Sambayan convenor agreed that unity talks will continue.

“The unity talks will continue even as we have chosen VP Leni already and that’s very clear. The unity talks continue up to now,” he said, noting that Robredo will also lead the talks once she decides to accept the nomination.
The vice president initially held separate talks with Senators Panfilo Lacson, Manny Pacquiao, and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno in a bid to form a unity ticket, but this fell as all three decided to announce their respective bids to run as president in 2022.
