PH's Moderna COVID-19 vaccine supply not included in recalled batches in Japan, FDA assures

The Moderna COVID-19 vaccines that arrived in the Philippines are not included in the batches under investigation in Japan, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) assured Friday, Sept. 3.

FDA Director-General Eric Domingo said they confirmed this after checking on the records following the incident in Japan, where three batches of Moderna vaccines were recalled after stainless steel contaminants were found in some vials.

"Fortunately, kinonfirm na rin namin na yung dumating dito sa Pilipinas hindi po kasama sa batches na under investigation (we have already confirmed that vaccines arrived in the Philippines were not part of the batches under investigation)," Domingo said during a televised briefing.

"Dito po sa atin ay tuloy ang paggamit ng Moderna (The use of Moderna here carries on). At this time there is no reason to stop it," the he added.

According to Domingo, they looked into the vaccine's certificate of analysis to check the batch and lot number of the vaccines delivered in the country. Through the data, they were able to confirm that the country's supply of the vaccine was not affected by the incident in Japan.

He also said that the vaccine's safety is further ensured when it reaches the local government units and vaccination centers, where healthcare workers check the vials prior to aspiration and injection.

The FDA approved on Sept. 3 the emergency use of Moderna vaccine on adolescents aged 12 to 17 in the Philippines.
