PCG plants over 500 mangrove propagules in Cagayan, Aurora, and Batanes

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) planted over 500 mangrove propagules and conducted simultaneous coastal clean-up drives in Cagayan, Aurora, and Batanes last Saturday, Aug. 28.

Personnel of PCG District Northeastern Luzon have also planted over 250 fruit-bearing seedlings, while 20 sacks of waste materials were collected during the initiative.

The PCG said the initiative was made successful in cooperation with the members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terorismo (KKDAT), and motorbanca owners and operators in the region.

According to the environmental organization World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the mangrove forests are home to a large variety of fish, crabs, and mollusk species. These fisheries form an essential source of food for thousands of coastal communities around the world.

The organization said planting mangroves help to prevent coastal damage from hurricanes and typhoons.
