Old woman escapes death in car-train collision in Sampaloc, Manila


A 68-year-old woman miraculously escaped death after her car was hit by a Philippine National Railways (PNR) train in Sampaloc, Manila on Thursday night (Sept. 2).

The driver of the car was identified as Melly S. Yeo, 68, a doctor and a resident of New Manila in Quezon City.

The PNR train driver involved in the incident was identified as Lorna Regoso.

The incident happened at 7:42 p.m. at the corner of Algeciras and Piy Margal Streets in Sampaloc, Manila.

Police said Yeo was driving on the westbound lane of Piy Margal Street while Regoso was driving southbound the PNR train along Algeciras St., Sampaloc, Manila.

After they reached a certain point of Algeciras corner Piy Margal Streets, the front portion of the PNR train hit the left side portion of the car being driven by Yeo.

According to witnesses Ronald Gutierrez, 47, and Richie Adriano, 45, both barangay councilors of Barangay 505, there was a crew man who was managing the traffic because of the incoming train.

However, Yeo drove on and was hit by the PNR train. She was unharmed. She was referred to a hospital for medical examination.

Investigation is still ongoing.
