Tons of unsold tomatoes in Cordillera will reach Metro Manila next week in a bid to prevent further losses from local farmers, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said.

Following reports that tons of unsold tomatoes are at risk of being thrown away in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the Agriculture department in the region has helped address the concern by linking them to buyers in Metro Manila.
"For next week, DA-CAR has coordinated with the Ateneo Manila and the Rural Rising wherein they will be buying 1.5 metric tons (MT), and 4 MT of tomatoes, respectively," the agency said Wednesday, Sept. 29.
It further said that they will use Kadiwa trucks to transport the tomatoes from the region and will coordinate with the DA's Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance to look for more markets.
According to Ifugao provincial agriculturist Domingo Mariano, the tomatoes cultivated by one of the farmers in Tubeng, Ap-apid in Tinoc, Ifugao, Enza Aguinao, were unsold due to the non-arrival of buyers from Metro Manila and Central Luzon. Aguinao was not able to sell about 2 MT of tomatoes from her latest harvest last week.
Mariano said the buyers did not make it due to the "no vaccination, no entry” policy implemented in various checkpoints by local government units (LGUs).
This was affirmed by Diego Madino, a stall owner at the Nueva Vizcaya Agriculture Terminal (NVAT), who said that about six MT of tomatoes were dumped in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya due to lack of buyers. Others were taken by duck and hog raisers.
NVAT said the prices of tomatoes have decreased from P40 to P10 in the past week.
Agriculture Secretary William Dar on Sept. 28 has reminded local farmers to seek the help of regional offices prior to harvesting their produce to prevent oversupply of vegetables that usually end up being thrown away.
“Ang regional field office po ay kinokontak yung mga ganun na sitwasyon kasi handa silang tumulong (Our regional field office gets in touch with farmers under those kinds of situations because they are ready to help),” Dar said.
In 2020, the DA-CAR assisted farmers in the municipality of Tinoc of their 58,991 MT of tomato harvest amounting to P507,467. This year, a total of 71,563 MT valued at P641,947 was linked, transported, and marketed to Metro Manila from the region.
Tomato is one of the high-value cash crops in Ifugao with 92 hectares of production area.
