Phivolcs: Taal Volcano emits plumes 3,000 meters high

Steam plumes up to 3,000 meters high have been observed at Taal Volcano's main crater in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Wednesday, Sept. 29.

"Activity at the main crater was dominated by upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in its lake which generated plumes 3,000 meters tall that drifted southwest and southeast," Phivolcs said in its volcano bulletin.

It also observed vog or volcanic smog in the volcano's immediate vicinity.

Taal's sulfur dioxide or SO2 emission averaged 6,077 tonnes per day when it was last measured on Sept. 28.

In the past 24 hours, Taal also registered one volcanic earthquake and low-level background tremor that has persisted since July 7, 2021.

Phivolcs said Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, which means that sudden steam- or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas within and around the volcano island.

The volcano has been under Alert Level 2 since July 23, 2021.

It reminded the public that entry into the Taal Volcano Island, especially the vicinities of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, is strictly prohibited.

Boating on Taal Lake must also be prohibited, Phivolcs said.
