Navy's BRP Dagupan City transports relief items to typhoon-hit Batanes

BRP Dagupan City (LS551), a logistics support vessel of the Philippine Navy (PN), has delivered relief items to Batanes after it was devastated by typhoon "Kiko" earlier this month, a Navy spokesperson disclosed Tuesday, September 28.

Commander Benjo Negranza, PN spokesperson, said 8,000 family food packs and 100 cases of bottled water were brought to the northernmost province in collaboration with its partner-agencies and other non-goverment organizations.

Troops from the Marine Battalion Landing Team 10 and other force multipliers assisted in the unloading of cargoes from the BRP Dagupan City upon its arrival at the port of Basco last September 25.

"This undertaking manifests the Navy's critical role in humanitarian assistance especially in a maritime nation such as ours, where the surrounding waters dictate a robust maritime transport capability such as the transport of much needed cargoes to far-flung islands," Negranaza said.

"It further conveyed the PN's commitment, together with fellow stakeholders, in providing prompt assistance to disaster-stricken fellow Filipinos," he added.

Kiko slammed Batanes and other parts of northern Luzon after it entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on September 7. Batanes was placed under Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 4 in a five-level warning system when Kiko intensified into a super-typhoon category.

It made landfall over Ivana, Batanes on September 11 and left P258 million worth of damage to the province's agriculture and infrastructure.
