Las Pinas LGU marks 40th day of the passing of 'Nene' Aguilar

The Las Pinas City government marked the 40th day of the passing of former Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar with the renaming two city hall buildings in his honor on Wednesday, Sept. 29.

The main health building at the city hall was renamed “Mayor Nene Aguilar Main Health Building” for his perseverance in giving the residents better health services.

The former mayor created the “Green Card Health Program” which provides the residents free medical treatment in the city’s accredited hospitals.

The building of the Disaster Reduction and Risk Management (DRRM) was renamed “Mayor Nene Aguilar DRRM Building”, which is now being used as the city’s evacuation center and multi-purpose building.

City Administrator Reynaldo Balagulan said Nene started his political career in 1992 as the city’s vice-mayor. He then became mayor in 1995.

As the city mayor, Nene launched the “clean and green” program and encouraged the city’s 250 homeowners associations to adopt the program in their areas.

The city was able to save more than P100 million when he acquired about 1,000 trucks to collect the garbage around the city.

The city government used that savings in the construction of more classrooms for the students.

The former mayor also constructed the Dr. Filemon C. Aguilar Memorial College (DFCAM) named after his late father, who also served as city mayor, to give Las Pinas youths free college education.

April Torres, a graduate from the DFCAM and now the city accountant, was very grateful to Nene for giving her the chance to become one of the scholars of the school.

The former mayor died due to heart ailment on Aug. 20 at the age of 74 at St. Lukes Medical City-Global City.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar said the legacy and selfless public service that her husband had rendered as Las Pinas mayor for 18 years will serve as her inspiration in serving as the current chief executive of the city.
