Voter registration period extension faces no obstacle in Palace, says Roque

The Palace sees no obstacle in its potential enactment of a measure that seeks to extend the voter registration period for the May 2022 elections for another 30 days.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque had this to say Tuesday, Sept. 28 or less than a day after Congress unanimously passed House Bill (HB) No.10261. The bill pitches for the voter registration period to be extended by one month.

"Wala pa po ang papel sa Malacañang. Pero wala pong nakikitang hadlang, no. Unless sa pag-aaral ng legal department ng Office of the Executive Secretary, no, ay mayroong legal objection (The document is not yet in Malacañang. But no obstacle to it is seen. Unless there's a legal objection based on the studies of the legal department of the Office of the Executive Secretary)," Roque told reporters in a virtual hearing.

"Sa tingin ko naman po, walang objection (I think there is no objection). But I stress na hindi pa po namin natatanggap yung pirmadong kopya ng panukalang batas na yan (that we still don't have the enrolled copy of that proposed measure)," he said.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) had originally set the deadline for voter registration on Sept. 30. This will be followed the next day, Oct. 1, by the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) of the May 2022 poll aspirants.

Comelec itself said it is likely that an extension of the period of voter registration will be granted.
