PCG personnel in Zamboanga arrested for extorting from applicants
Authorities arrested on Monday, Sept. 27, a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel in Zamboanga City for allegedly extorting money from applicants in exchange for swift enlistment into the service.
Apprentice Seaman (ASN) Aldasher Anni, 25, was nabbed by joint members of PCG and the Philippine National Police at a hotel on Veterans Avenue in Zamboanga City in an entrapment operation. He was previously detailed at Coast Guard Station Basih-Balan before he went absent without official leave starting August 30.

His arrest came after a complainant said Anni allegedly asked for P8,000 for the immediate release of his and his fellow applicants medical and dental clearances without undergoing any evaluations, PCG said.
Apart from the marked money handed by the complainant, seized from the suspect was a boodle money amounting to P132,000.
PCG said Anni violated the Republic Act No. 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and the Republic Act No. 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.
Following the incident, Coast Guard commandant Vice Admiral Leopoldo Laroya ordered an investigation to identify other personnel who might be working with Anni in the activity.
Leopoldo issued a warning that PCG "will never tolerate extortion or any act of corruption among its personnel."
"This incident is a warning to the men and women of the Coast Guard that unscrupulous practices will result in the removal of their dignity as public servants and waste their years of service to the nation," he said.
