Diocese of Tarlac to observe Day of Prayer, Fasting and Penance on Oct 1

Tarlac Bishop Enrique Macaraeg has called for a Day of Prayer, Fasting, and Penance in his diocese on Oct. 1.

The prelate issued the call in a circular letter addressed to priests, religious sisters and lay faithful dated Sept. 23.

"As your pastor and shepherd, I ask you that we be united as God's family on Oct. 1, 2021, First Friday of the month and Memorial of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, to pray, fast, and do penance for the forgiveness of sins and for the end of this pandemic," Macaraeg said.

"Now, more than ever, is the time to pray hard and to humbly return to the Lord," he added.

Macaraeg will lead the Prayers from the San Sebastian Cathedral at 4:30 p.m. which will start with the Prayer of Exorcism.

"I ask the Parish Priests to bless the environs of your parish with Holy Water to the extent that it is possible," he said.

As it is the first Friday of the month, Macaraeg said, it is also an opportune to expose the Blessed Sacrament, spend time in silent prayer and adoration and to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

He said fasting could follow the simple rule of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday; one full meal and two half meals.

As for penance, Macaraeg said, this could take in various forms like going to confession, spending time in personal prayer, doing service to our neighbor, giving alms to the poor.

And since October is also the month of the Holy Rosary, the prelate asked for the return to the practice of praying the family rosary with the specific intentions of forgiveness of sins and the end to the pandemic.

"There is no need to gather as a multitude to pray. Let our homes, parishes, small communities be the focal point of prayer and penance," Macaraeg said.
