Marcos's nomination for president does not bother 1Sambayan; Sara still admin's best bet

Opposition coalition 1Sambayan is not bothered with the possibility that Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. will run for president in 2022, but said Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is still the force to be reckoned with.

1Sambayan convenor Retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio made the statement after Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL) nominated Marcos as its candidate for the presidency in next year's polls.

In an online forum, Carpio said Marcos's nomination was not surprising and that the late dictator's son may even pair up with the Davao City Mayor even though she already declared she will not be running for a national post.

"It's not a surprise that the KBL has nominated Bongbong because he has always said that he is running for national office," he said.

"It's still possible that it will be a team-up with Sara Duterte and Bongbong in the end because that will be the strongest time," he added.

According to the retired magistrate, Duterte-Carpio is actually the administration's strongest bet for the 2022 elections. Even though she already said she will not run, she may still change her mind.

"It's Sara Duterte who's leading so she appears to be the strongest admin bet at this time," Carpio said.

"If the father (President Duterte) withdraws , then that impediment will be gone and logically she can run again," he added.

Both President Duterte and Mayor Carpio have agreed that only one Duterte should run for a national post in 2022. The President has already announced his candidacy for vice president while his daughter would seek reelection.

Meanwhile, 1Sambayan has yet to announce its candidates for president and vice president, and its senatorial slate but assured its supporters that talks are still ongoing.
