Comelec officials to discuss extension of voter registration

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Friday, Sept. 24 that its officials will be discussing the proposals to extend the voter registration period.

Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said that a “management committee meeting” is set to discuss possible scenarios in the event that the voter registration period will be extended beyond the set deadline on Sept. 30.

“Chairman Sheriff Abas is going to convene a management committee meeting, participated in by all top Comelec officials,” said Jimenez in a press briefing.

“The ManCom will discuss the impact of voter registration extension on our preparations for the 2022 national and local elections. Taking into consideration the realities on the ground,” he added.

“We’re gonna be talking about all kinds of extensions, all periods I would say. Again, the idea of the ManCom is to give out every possible scenario,” he furthered.

Jimenez said that this meeting will be done due to “public clamor” to extend the voter registration.

“Again our position remains roughly the same: we still maintain that our timelines make it very difficult for us to actually have an extension. However, we are going the extra mile precisely because we feel the clamor of the people,” he said.

Jimenez said that the ManCom “will be held before next week’s en banc.”

“We will make that decision on that point prior to the en banc meeting and the en banc meeting will promulgate the decision,” he said.
