Yulo tops floor exercise, bronze in vault

Carlos Yulo returned to competition after his Tokyo Olympics campaign by capturing one gold and one bronze medal in the 2021 All-Japan Senior and Masters Gymnastics Championships in Yamagata Thursday.

Yulo ruled the floor exercise where he is the reigning world champion by registering 15.300 points and then went on to grab the bronze in the vault with 15.000.

His performance was redemption of sorts after his unsuccessful maiden Olympics appearance last August where he did not advance to the medal round of the floor exercise where he is the heavy favorite to win.

Yulo’s coach Munehiro Kugimiya likewise saw it after posting photos of the 21-year-old star gymnast with a caption, “Revenge the Tokyo.”

At the Olympics, Yulo scored 13.566 for 41^st place in the floor exercise qualifications.

He, however, finished a surprising fourth in vault with 14.716.

The tournament is a springboard to the 50^th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships on Oct. 18 to 24 in Kitakyushu, Japan.
