St. Luke's faces manpower shortage as 119 health workers undergo quarantine

The St. Luke's Medical Center (SLMC) is facing a manpower shortage as over a hundred of their health workers are under quarantine after being exposed to coronavirus disease (COVID-19), an official of the hospital said Thursday, Sept. 23.

In an interview with TeleRadyo, SLMC President and CEO Dr. Art Dela Peña said at 119 of their health workers are in different stages of quarantine after being exposed to the virus.

"Kaya namin sana kaya lang yung taong mag-aalaga dun sa mga pasyente, kasi kumpleto naman kami sa number kaya lang hindi naman wonderwomen at supermen ang aming nurses, nagkakasakit din (We can accommodate more patients, but we're currently facing manpower shortage. Our nurses are not wonderwomen and supermen, they also get sick)," Dela Peña said.

"Yun po ang nagpapahirap samin. Puno pa rin kami dahil talagang maraming pasyente ang nagkokonsulta sa emergency room namin (That's our current issue. We're still at full capacity because we have a lot of patients going to our emergency room)," he added.

Dela Peña said there are eight critically ill patients with COVID-19 who are currently staying at their emergency room because their intensive care unit is full.

However, he assured that patients at the emergency room are being attended to while waiting to be admitted at the hospital.

"Pag dumami ang taong nag-aalaga sa amin, dadagdagan namin ang kapasidad... Medyo mahirap ngayon kokonti talaga ang available manpower (When the number of our staff who take care of the patients increases, we will also increase our capacity... But it's a bit difficult now because we have little manpower available)."
