San Juan City celebrates 'World Car Free Day;' relaunches 'Bisikleta Para sa Bakuna'

In celebration of "World Car Free Day"on Wednesday, September 22, the San Juan City local government relaunched its "Bisikleta Para sa Bakuna" program to promote the use of bicycles as an alternative mode of transportation and urge its residents to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora, together with city government officials and staff, as well as members of the police, held a bike ride around San Juan City to promote the two events.

“A car-free community, even in just one day, provides a great impact to the environment and this is even being organized worldwide, so I can imagine how much pollution from vehicle emissions is reduced on a single day all over the world,” Zamora said.

"As a bike enthusiast myself, I personally recognize the benefits of biking not only to our health but to our environment as well, especially during this pandemic when public transportation is also compromised," he added.

Zamora said that even after the city was given a Gold Award for being one of the most bike-friendly cities in the First Mobility Awards held last year, San Juan City remains an ardent supporter of programs that promote environmental causes and health care awareness.

“We remain to be steadfast in promoting our vaccination program as an integral part of our fight against COVID-19, despite having reached the target population and achieved the herd immunity already, we still want to make sure that all the San Juaneños are protected by the vaccines from severe symptoms should they get infected with the disease. San Juan City has also started vaccinating non-residents last week,” the mayor said.
