4.9-magnitude quake jolts S. Luzon -- Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has downgraded the 5.0-magnitude quake that rocked Occidental Mindoro early Wednesday to magnitude 4.9.

Phivolcs said the epicenter of the earthquake was traced at 13 kilometers (km) northwest of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro at around 12:43 a.m.

The earthquake was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Mamburao, Abra de Ilog, and Paluan, Occidental Mindoro, and in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.

It was "weak" at Intensity III in Batangas City, Mabini, Malvar, Calaca, San Pascual, and Tingloy in Batangas.

Meanwhile, it was slightly felt at Intensity II in Bauan, Lipa City, San Jose, and Nasugbu in Batangas, Tagaytay City in Cavite, and Quezon City in Metro Manila.

It was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Talisay, Batangas.

Phivolcs' instruments also measured the earthquake at Intensity IV in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro; Intensity III in Tagaytay City; Intensity II in Muntinlupa City, Batangas City and Calatagan in Batangas, and Mauban, Mulanay and Dolores in Quezon; and Intensity I in Carmona, Cavite and Plaridel, Bulacan

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are likely to occur.
