Voter registration deadline still Sept 30

The deadline of the voter registration period is still on Sept.30.

On Tuesday, Sept. 21, Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez said the commission has, thus far, "not amended it's position not to extend the deadline for voter registration."

This, despite calls from legislators for an extension.

"Congress unquestionably holds the power of the purse. For its part, Comelec - as the sole government entity tasked with the conduct of elections - can only do its utmost to ensure that it fulfills its mandate to hold secure, accurate, and free and fair elections," said Jimenez in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Comelec also took note of the position of the Department of Health (DOH) on the use of antigen test during the filing of the certificate of candidacy (COC).

"The Comelec notes the DOH's statement, but also notes that antigen tests are accepted by the House of Representatives as a requirement for entry into their premises," Jimenez said.

The DOH on Monday said it is not recommending antigen testing during the filing of COCs which is from Oct. 1 to 8.

"We don't recommend the rapid antigen test kits to be used as screening for people, who will vote or for those joining in events," Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said.

"As we said, the use of antigen test must be appropriate to avoid question to the results if ever we use it," she added.

In Resolution No. 10717, the Comelec En Banc said all COC filers must present negative RT-PCR test or antigen test results as part of the health and safety measures of the poll body.
