The Manila Police and Quezon City Police Districts on Tuesday, Sept. 21 are now on full alert as they prepare for the rallies and activities in connection with the 49th anniversary of Martial Law declaration.
Around 1,500 police were deployed in the city of Manila.
In a DZBB report, MPD Chief Brig. Gen. Leo Francisco said the police will ensure that the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases protocols will be strictly followed such as the wearing of masks and the observance of physical distancing.
Checkpoints were also set up in parts of Manila to control crowds.
Only a limited number of individuals will be allowed to protest at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila, Francisco said.
He encouraged the public not to participate in the protests as mass gatherings are still prohibited.
In Quezon City, the QCPD, along with the K-9 units, are already on standby at the People Power Monument and White Plains Avenue.
Lt. Col. Melchor Rosales, QCPD Station 8 chief, said they are also on full alert just in case there will be protests or activities today.
Police were also deployed in other areas where there is a high chance of protests to be staged such as in the University of the Philippines, Quezon City Memorial Circle, Welcome Rotonda, and parts of Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City.
September 21 is the 49th anniversary of President Ferdinand E. Marcos' declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines.
Several human rights groups, grassroots activists, and civil society organizations are expected to join the protest actions today.
