'Online Kopyahan' is a result of unresolved distance woes, group says

For a group of teachers and education workers, the reported cheating among learners through “Online Kopyahan” Facebook page is a result of the “flawed design” of and lacking provision for distance learning.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) on Monday, Sept. 20, said that the “root” of the “Online Kopyahan” problem is that teachers and students are overwhelmed with the “burdensome” contents of the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd) under distance learning.

ACT said that the MELCs do not only demand an “almost inhumane amount of work” amidst the health and socio-economic crisis but also fails to “cover lessons relevant” to the plight of the stakeholders.

“Students’ interests and appreciation for learning waned due to education’s lack of relevance and responsiveness to their struggles and aspirations, so they merely comply with ever-mounting school requirements,” ACT said.

The group pointed out that education stakeholders have repeatedly “expressed their struggles” with remote learning as the burden of teaching fell on parents who are not trained for such or have little to no education background themselves.

“It also doesn’t help that millions of students have very limited access to gadgets and internet connectivity, which further hampered their means to seek guidance from teachers or to find other learning resources,” ACT explained.

Given all the unresolved problems under distance learning, ACT said that it “cannot blame students who turn to desperate measures just to pass their classes when their pleas for help were consistently ignored.”

At the same time, ACT noted that it cannot also “pick at parents who have resorted to similar means, nor can we point fingers at overworked teachers who bear the brunt of delivering a deeply flawed and un-provided for distance learning.”

For the group, these are but “mere results of the problematic system of education that the government continues to neglect.”

In order to truly address the issue of the alleged cheating, ACT urged the Duterte government and the DepEd to resolve the dire issues hounding its education program at the time of pandemic.
