BOC destroys P7.4-B haul of fake goods

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) destroyed on Monday, Sept 20, its biggest haul of counterfeit goods amounting to P7.4 billion in Valenzuela City.

Products bearing known registered marks such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Vans, Fubu, Tribal, Under Armour, Nike, Adidas, Zara, H&M, Calvin Klein, Old Navy, Guess, Lee, Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste, Havaianas, Freego, Wrangler, Burberry, Jordan, Gap, Bershka, Macbeth, Puma, Hollister, Reebok, Joe Malone and Bulgari were among the goods that were disposed.

Items such as bags, shoes, and clothes were destroyed through crushing while chemicals such as fake shampoos and lotions were treated to ensure that such would not harm the environment.

According to the bureau, these were the items uncovered in a warehouse in Bagong Milenyo, Pasay City.

The goods valued at P7,429,638,000 is the bureau's biggest accomplishment resulting from a single operation to date.

The condemnation activity was attended by officials from the Port of Manila (POM), Auction and Cargo Disposal Division (POM-ACDD), POM Law Division and members of the Port Enforcement, Security Service (ESS) Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) and representatives from the brand owners and Intellectual Property Rights Division (IPRD).

The Customs bureau said the imported counterfeit items were seized for violation of Section 108 (f) of RA 10863 also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) and RA 8293 otherwise known as the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.
