LOOK: Binondo-Intramuros Bridge shapes up, now at 77% progress

The Binondo-Intramuros Bridge is now shaping up as its main structure is nearing completion.

Installation of fabricated precast concrete slab panels that will serve as main bridge carriageway of the P3.39-billion Binondo-Intramuros Bridge Project are now nearing completion, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar said Thursday, Sept. 2.

The entire bridge construction is now at 77 percent progress rate. It is expected to open to motorists in the first quarter of 2022.

According to Undersecretary Emil Sadain, they are currently working on the relocation of distribution poles and overhead high tension lines that pose serious safety concerns in the ongoing construction of ramps in Binondo and Intramuros area.

An inspection was recently conducted to assess the problem on the existing Meralco and Telco lines which will be affected by the launching of steel box girders for the down-ramp along Estero De Binondo towards Plaza del Conde and Rentas Street and the relocation of affected lines along Muelle de Binondo (near San Nicolas Fire Station) and Rentas Street where the down-ramp of the bridge project will be connected.

The bridge project will connect the historic district of Intramuros on Solana Street and Riverside Drive to the bustling district of Binondo on Rentas Street/Plaza del Conde Street and Muelle dela Industria.

Once completed the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge will carry extra traffic of around 30,000 vehicles per day from key roads in the city of Manila. It will also help extend the life of existing Jones, Delpan and MacArthur Bridges by decongesting traffic.
