PhilSA to hold 'build your own model satellite' contest on World Space Week

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) will hold a “Build Your Own Model Satellite” lecture and competition as part of the celebration of the World Space Week next month.

“The Philippine Space Agency is inviting all space enthusiast kids aged 9-10, their parents, and siblings to be a part of the Build Your Own Model Satellite activity and competition,” the agency said.

During the event, Ariston N. Gonzalez of the Space Technology Applications Mastery, Innovation and Advancement (STAMINA4Space) Program will have an online workshop on how to build a model satellite out of recyclable or edible materials.

Interested participants are urged to register and participate in the lecture that will be held on Oct. 4. Upon registration, the contest mechanics will then be sent to the participants.

“Winners will receive prizes and will be awarded during the World Space Week closing program on Oct. 9,” PhilSA said.

The WSW is an annual international celebration of science and technology and their contribution to human lives.

Declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, the WSW begins every Oct. 4. to commemorate the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957.

It ends on Oct. 10 to mark the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies in 1967.

For this year, the celebration will focus on the theme, “Women in Space”.
