National IDs delivered to 1.7 million Filipinos -- PSA

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has so far delivered 1.7 million national identification (ID) cards nationwide, Assistant Secretary Rose Bautista said on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

The issuance of the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) Number or PSN and delivery of the Philippine ID (PhilID) is the third and final step of the PhilSys registration.

Bautista reminded those who have received their PhilIDs to avoid posting photos of it on social media.

"Ang ating ID is something na dapat itinatago at hindi po ini-expose sa fraud (Our national ID is something that should be secured and not exposed to fraud), Bautista said during the Laging Handa public briefing.

Moreover, Bautista said that around 30 million Filipinos have successfully completed the second step of registration or biometrics registration for the national ID.

She said that the quarantine restrictions being implemented to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease have been a "big challenge" to PSA's registration process.

"We estimate that we have lost about close to 4,000 na foregone registration dahil kailangan mag-comply kami sa mga local IATF na hindi puwedeng mag-open ang aming mga registration center (We estimate that we have lost about close to 4,000 foregone registrations because we have to comply with the local Inter-Agency Task Force's decision prohibiting us from opening of our registration centers)," Bautista pointed out.

PSA is hoping to register at least 50 million Filipinos before the end of 2021 to provide ease of public access to financial services and inclusion, social protection, health, education, and other government services.

It added that with PhilSys, public and private transactions will be made safer, more seamless, and more efficient as the country transitions into a digital economy.
