Rain showers, thunderstorms over parts of PH due to ITCZ -- PAGASA

The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), or the region where trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge, remains the dominant weather system in the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Tuesday, Sept. 14.

Meanwhile, the effect of the southwest monsoon or "habagat" has temporarily weakened.

Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may prevail over Palawan, Aklan, Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, and Lanao del Norte.

PAGASA warned those in these areas against possible heavy to intense rains that may trigger flash floods or landslides.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy conditions but may also experience isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA said severe thunderstorms, which are often associated with short-lived heavy rains, may also trigger flash floods or landslides.

Weather specialist Ariel Rojas said PAGASA has not monitored a tropical cyclone that may develop inside or near the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) within 24 to 48 hours.

However, a low pressure area may form east of Visayas and Mindanao by Thursday or Friday, Sept. 16 or 17.

Rojas advised the public to continue monitoring PAGASA updates regarding this potential weather disturbance.
