DepEd reaches 97% of last year's enrollment with 25.5 million enrollees for SY 2021-2022

On the second of classes for the newly-opened school year, the Department of Education (DepEd) has recorded over 25.5 million enrollees or 97.5 percent of the enrollment last year.

Data released by DepEd on Tuesday, Sept. 14 showed that there are 25, 582, 224 enrollees in basic education for School Year (SY) 2021-2022.

Of this number, 21, 024, 897 learners enrolled in public and private schools including State Universities and Colleges (SUCs)/Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) that offer basic education since the regular enrollment started on Aug. 16.

Based on DepEd’s Learner Information System (LIS) Quick Count, there are 19, 411, 039 students enrolled in public schools; 1, 563, 321 in private schools; and 50, 537 learners in SUCs/LUCs.

The current enrollment data included 4, 557, 327 Kindergarten, Grades 1, 7, and 11 learners who registered early in March until May.

With 3, 337, 054 enrollees, DepEd data showed that Region IV-A has recorded the highest number of enrolment among all regions. Region III came next with 2, 522, 006 enrollees followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,341, 528.

To encourage more parents and guardians to enroll the children, DepEd has extended the enrollment period for public schools until the end of the month.

During the National School Opening Day program on Sept. 13, Education Secretary Leonor Briones expressed optimism that this year’s enrollment will still increase. “We expect more to enroll because we allow late enrollment until the end of the month,” Briones said.

“When the final numbers come in, we are confident that we will be able to match last year’s enrollment in spite of the fact that the challenges are different this time,” she said.

DepEd has 26. 2 million recorded enrollees in SY 2021-2022.

Meanwhile, DepEd officially welcomed the new school year with renewed optimism for basic education, even calling it a “success” despite the challenges brought by the pandemic.

“Even in the time of cholera or COVID-19, with all its horrors and terrors, there is love. Even in the time of evil, there is always hope. Even in the time of the Delta variant, there is love. And there is education,” Briones said.

Briones shared that the DepEd continues to strive to deliver its mandate of providing education for learners and ensuring the welfare of teachers amidst the pandemic.

In particular, she cited the implementation of the Basic Education-Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) and the increase of salaries and benefits of personnel.

“We did what was considered impossible in five months. We translated printed material into TV, radio, cell phone, tablet; and yes, utilized walkie-talkies for remote schools,” she said.

President Duterte also extended his message to DepEd and Filipino educators through a video message which was shown during the virtual program watched by more than 300,000 live viewers.

“This event shows DepEd’s strong commitment to provide the best quality education for our students despite the challenges of the pandemic,” he said.
