Ty Tang took a leave of absence as coach of the College of St. Benilde Blazers, the school confirmed Sunday.

Stephen Fernandez, Director of the Benilde Center for Sports Development, said Tang remains committed to the squad despite Tang’s recent move to Canada.

“We have not declared his position vacant,” Fernandez told Manila Bulletin.

“Although we know he has long-term plans of migrating, he said he’s open to handle the team should the NCAA season pushes through next year.”

Fernandez said they have been in constant communication with Tang for the past months, adding the young mentor has been open to them about his plans to leave for Canada with his family.

Fernandez also said they are not yet in the situation where they have to look for a new coach for the Blazers.

“Hindi pa kami nasa point na ganun,” he said.

Tang was coach of the Blazers from 2017 to 2019 until pandemic halted the NCAA season in 2020.

During his first year, the Blazers struggled with four wins against 14 losses, but the team showed their force in the next two years with fifth-place finishes and a combined 19 wins and 17 defeats.

While amateur and collegiate tournaments remained on hold for the past two years due to the pandemic, Fernandez said the school has remained committed to support their student-athletes.

“For some time, online training has been conducted by coaches voluntarily. But players and coaches still remain in touch during these times,” Fernandez said.

“We can only plan really, but the implementation is another matter. We could only hope that the situation gets better next year.”
