Meggie Ochoa raring to compete in three world championships

Jiu-jitsu icon Meggie Ochoa is raring to compete in three different world championships in the next coming months amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The last time she actually saw action in a tournament was when she ruled the -45kg event of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games to deliver the gold medal for the Philippines, months before the coronavirus put a standstill at the sporting world.

Ochoa, unfortunately, bared that she is not a hundred percent sure to compete in all those tournaments.

"For me, there are three world titles actually in the next three months," said Ochoa, also a 2018 world champion, during the #UnderTheArmour webinar Saturday, Sept. 11. "But I'm not 100 percent sure if I will be able to join all because only one of them is only indoors or under the jurisdiction of our national team.

"So the other two, I have to look for other sponsorship to be able to go."

The three world championships are sanctioned by the JJIF, the UAEJJF (World Professional Championships), and the IBJJF which will kick off respectively on October, November, and December.

It was in the JJIF World Championship in 2018 when Ochoa bagged the gold medal in Sweden.

Meanwhile, the 29-year-old multi-medalist said both her advocacy against sexual abuse and training for the competition are continuous on her end.

"For them (youth), the impact is huge because until now they're not allowed to go out.. They were stuck in their homes and even their school where they get to interact with other friends that serve as people they talk to in difficult times, they can't have that right now" said Ochoa. "So I think for them it's even more difficult and to be able to help them or reach out to them we do continue to hold online classes."

In this way, Ochoa said they were able to check up on them and interact with their program's recipients in these trying times, sharing her knowledge not only in the sport but also in touching the different aspects of life.
