'Kiko' further weakens; Signal No. 4 remains hoisted over northern Batanes

Typhoon "Kiko" (international name "Chanthu") has further weakened while crossing the coastal waters of Itbayat, Batanes, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 2 p.m. bulletin on Saturday, Sept. 11.

PAGASA said Kiko has maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kph while moving north-northwest at 15 kph.

Tropical cyclone wind signal number 4 remains hoisted over the northern portion of Batanes and Signal No. 3 in the rest of Batanes.

Meanwhile, Signal No. 2 was still in effect in the northern portion of Babuyan Islands and Signal No. 1 in the rest of Babuyan Islands, northern portion of Cagayan, and northeastern portion of Ilocos Norte.

PAGASA said Kiko may continue to bring heavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Batanes in the next 24 hours.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains are also likely over Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Apayao, and Kalinga.

PAGASA warned against possible scattered to widespread flooding including flash floods and rain-induced landslides in these areas, especially those that are highly susceptible to these hazards.

In the next 24 hours, typhoon Kiko is also expected to continue to enhance the southwest monsoon or "habagat" and bring moderate to heavy monsoon rains over Metro Manila, the rest of Ilocos Region, and the western sections of Central and Southern Luzon in the next 24 hours.

Kiko may exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Sunday evening or early Monday morning, Sept. 13, PAGASA said.
