Rain or Shine coach Chris Gavina lauded rookies Santi Santillan, Anton Asistio and Andrei Caracut for the way they have performed during the team’s last two games in the PBA Philippine Cup.
Gavina said after the Elasto Painters snapped their two-game losing streak with a 75-72 win over the Magnolia Hotshots that the three neophytes have not only stepped up to the challenge but are also making that they would be accountable to everything they do on the floor.
“We don’t have labels with our young guys anymore. I don’t see them as rookies in any way or form,” Gavina said after Rain or Shine improved to 5-4 in the standings.
“In the past two games, these guys have really stepped up and owned up to the accountability and the level of play we need to them to rise up.”
Santillan registered a season-high 14 points and grabbed five rebounds, but he made a good impression by embracing the physical matchup with Magnolia’s Calvin Abueva.
The 6-foot-5 former 3x3 cager was picked fifth in the PBA Rookie Draft last March by Rain or Shine with the intention of having a versatile big man who can also be also be reliable on the defensive end.
“Santi’s been a revelation for us, to be honest,” Gavina said. “We know the work ethic he possessed, but his ability to rise his game up as the game gets bigger and bigger has truly shown as our season comes along. It’s an added luxury on my part to have such a big, high-potential output kind of player and rookie in Santi.”
Asistio and Caracut, taken late in the second round, were also instrumental in the previous games at the backcourt spot.
Despite an 83-77 loss to defending champion Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, Asistio dropped a season-best 14 points during the contest that Rain or Shine could have won if not for some endgame lapses.
Asistio’s offense cooled off against Magnolia with only two points, but did produce four rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes as a starter while Caracut provided seven points in 16 minutes.
“We put them to trial of fire, and what more than this Magnolia team with all these tough, defensive-minded guards,” said Gavina. “They really stood their ground and we hope that they be consistent in what they do as we continue to our last two games.”
Gavina is confident that Santillan, Asistio and Caracut will be able to take their game to another level as ROS enters the final two games of the eliminations.
“I have full trust moving forward that they’ll play even better as we go along,” he said.
