The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) denied Friday, Sept. 10, that the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Jail where two detainees were killed in a Sept. 7 shooting incident is under its jurisdiction.

"Oriental Mindoro Provincial Jail is not under the jurisdiction and management of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology," said Chief Inspector Xavier Solda, BJMP spokesperson.
Solda issued the statement to correct what he termed as "erroneous reports implicating the agency" in the said incident.
Last Sept. 7, detainee Edison Sampaga shot and killed fellow inmate Lowelyn Mendoza at the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Jail.
Police reports also disclosed that Sampaga later shot himself. Five others were also hurt in the shooting incident.
The clarification was released after online news site Rappler inquired if the BJMP will place the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Jail under heightened alert in wake of the incident.
