Taal Volcano continues to blow off steam -- Phivolcs

Steam-rich plumes up to three kilometers high have been observed at Taal Volcano's main crater in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Wednesday, Sept. 1.

Phivolcs said the steam plumes were generated by the active upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in Taal Lake.

Taal's sulfur dioxide or SO2 emission averaged 3,848 tonnes per day when it was last measured on Aug. 25.

"Activity at the main crater was dominated by upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in its lake which generated plumes 3000 meters tall that drifted northeast and northwest," Phivolcs said in its volcano bulletin issued on Wednesday.

In the past 24 hours, Taal also registered 36 volcanic earthquakes, including nine volcanic tremor events having durations of one to five minutes, 25 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, two hybrid events, and low-level background tremor that has persisted since July 7, 2021.

Phivolcs said Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, which means that sudden steam- or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas within and around the volcano island.

It reminded the public that entry into the Taal Volcano Island, especially the vicinities of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, is strictly prohibited.

Boating on Taal Lake must also be prohibited, it added.
