Darryl Yap on '69+1:' 'This is entertainment with education!'

Amid the ongoing pandemic, controversial director Darryl Yap has notched back-to-back hit projects.

Just like in past outings, his latest movie "69+1" has also been receiving mixed reactions.

Some say he is encouraging immorality.

Others say he is simply courting controversy.

Darryl is not worried.

In an interview, Darryl told Bulletin Entertainment that his films simply mirror society.

"I'm telling them what is happening, na this is the environment, this is what's happening around us. Now, through this film, they will decide whether they want to be in that predicament. Gusto ba nila ng nasa ganitong sitwasyon?"

Note that "69+1," which features Maui Taylor, Rose Van Ginkel, and Janno Gibbs is about a threesome.

Darryl shared, "When people always judge me and saying that I'm promoting immoral things or things that are not supposed to be viewed by children, aren't they thankful that they have a complete example of what not to do? Because sometimes when we let the children watch sensitive content like this, they always tell them in imagination. But, you know, it's up to the kids when they grow up. Kung maaga silang na expose sa ganito then they'll say 'Ay hindi maganda yan.' When they happen to see '69+1,' they have to weigh things."

Darryl reiterated that it's not the parents who will think for their kids.

"So this is not an endorsement; this is entertainment with education. And sometimes, education is a bitter pill to swallow as same as the truth. But it's up to the people to decide."

Darryl made clear he's not a "preachy" filmmaker.

"I don't tell them what to do and what not to do. I just present the truth and the things that are happening. And it's up to them... I believe that the Filipino audience, we are very intelligent right now. Sa dami ng streaming apps, sa dami ng pelikulang hinahain sa atin. Feeling ko, ang manunuod ng pelikula ko ay hindi naman t*nga at b*bo na 'Ay pwedeng tatlo, maghanap ako ng dalawa.' Feeling ko, hindi naman po ganun. So I'm just clinging onto the part that the Filipino audience is as smart as the international ones."

Among Darryl's projects were "Jowable," “Paglaki Ko Gusto Kong Maging Pornstar,” "Tililing," "Gluta," “Ang Babaeng Walang Pakiramdam,” and “Revirginized.”
