Sotto unperturbed by political groups supporting HNP's Sara Duterte

Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Monday, August 9 said he is unperturbed with the emerging number of political parties that have pledged their support to Hugpong ng Pagbabago’s Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Sotto, Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) chairman, and who is expected to run alongside Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson in the upcoming May 2022 elections, said he and his running mate will pursue their political platforms and programs for the people.

“To each his own. Alliances are good but it will not dictate our resolve to offer our ‘KKK’ to our people,” Sotto said, referring to their slogan “katapatan, katapangan, kakayanan” which stands for faithfulness, bravery and competency.

The Senate leader made the statement after Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) president and Sen. Sonny Angara confirmed that his party will support the Davao City mayor should she decide to run in next year’s polls.

According to Angara, the LDP party is just waiting for the draft memorandum of agreement (MOA) to formalize any agreements to be made.

Aside from the LDP, other parties that have pledged to support Duterte-Carpio are the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Nacionalista Party of former Senate President Manny Villar, Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) of former President Joseph Estrada and three other political groups.

Last week, Lacson confirmed that his offer of a “unification” formula with leading opposition contender Vice President Leni Robredo fizzled out, and said he accepts her decision regarding the matter.

But sought for comment, Sotto said he could not help but be disappointed with Robredo’s supporters whom he said “misunderstood” Lacson’s offer when they met with the vice president last July.

“I’m disappointed with her supporters who failed to understand (the offer),” Sotto said.

The Senate leader insisted that Lacson’s offer to Robredo was “sincere and selfless.”

“It's her opinion. Ping's offer was sincere and selfless. She was not supposed to reject right away and instead study first the possibilities,” the Senate leader said.

“Outright rejection meant they had something else in mind at the outset,” he pointed out.
