Boat captain, 3 others died of suffocation off Zamboanga City waters
Four crew members of a fishing vessel died after they reportedly suffocated while cleaning the fish storage compartment off the waters of Zamboanga CIty, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Monday, August 9.
They were identified as boat captain Joseph Oro, Marjon Oro, Charlie Caspe, and Billy Lamag.
In a report, the PCG said the boat captain of FV Julius 558 tasked two of boat crew to clean the fish storage compartment using a submersible pump at around 6 a.m. on August 5.

The two crew were specifically ordered to remove the accumulated water, which was caused by melted ice mixed with remains of decomposing fish in the vessel’s compartment.
But after a few minutes the two crew were shouting for help as they experienced shortness of breath and dizziness.

The boat captain and another crew proceeded to the fish storage compartment to rendered assistance. However, they also experienced the same.
Other crewmen immediately assisted the unconscious mariners while the Chief Mate of the vessel maneuvered the fishing vessel to YL Wharf in Talisayan, Zamboanga City.
The victims, however, were declared dead.
