'Worthy of emulation': Paalam, Marcial hailed by DOT

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has hailed boxers Carlo Paalam and Eumir Marcial for adding to the total medal output of the Philippines in the Tokyo Olympics--the country's best campaign in the history of the quadrennial games.

"The congratulates Filipino boxers Carlo Paalam for winning a silver medal in the men’s flyweight division, and Eumir Marcial for achieving a bronze medal in the men’s middleweight division at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan," the agency said in a statement Sunday, August 8.

"The grit and resilience that Paalam and Marcial have shown in their Olympic journey are worthy of emulation. They provide inspiration to aspiring athletes, and their victories not only make us proud, but also give hope and joy to our people," it said.

The department, headed by Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, had earlier cited the triumphs of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz and boxer Nesthy Petecio, who won a gold medal and silver medal, respectively, at Tokyo.

Diaz's gold was the Philippines' first ever in the Olympics.

"The DOT thanks all the Filipino athletes who competed at the Tokyo Olympics for bringing pride and honor to our nation and for giving their best to make this our country’s best performance in the Olympics to date," the agency further said.
